Pinaki Haldar, Vice President & Business Head – SCVPU, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, says: The Tata Ace Pro has been purposefully designed based on deep customer insights and thoughtfully engineered to cater to a wide spectrum of applications. Edited excerpts:
What drove Tata Motors to create the new Ace Pro, and how does it build on the legacy of the original Ace?
When we launched the Tata Ace years ago, we essentially created a new category—an affordable four-wheeler that replaced three-wheelers for small commercial transport. Over 25 lakh customers have adopted the platform, and it helped define the segment.
However, with the transition from BS4 to BS6 and then to BS6 Phase 2, the product improved significantly—becoming cleaner, greener, and more efficient. But that also meant a 50% increase in cost, which moved the product out of reach for some of our core customers. That’s when the three-wheeler segment started booming again. We realised we had to reintroduce a solution that hit the sweet spot on price and performance. That’s where Ace Pro comes in.
So the Ace Pro is intended to reclaim that affordability sweet spot?
Exactly. We've priced it aggressively—factoring in inflation—to bring back the BS4-era affordability. But we didn’t stop at pricing. We wanted to give customers a 360-degree solution—better economics, greater comfort, and enhanced safety. Compared to a similarly priced three-wheeler, the Ace Pro offers 15% better cost of operation and up to 22% higher revenue potential, thanks to a larger 750 kg load body.
You mentioned comfort and safety—what are the key upgrades in these areas?
Safety is a big leap. Ace Pro meets AIS 096 full frontal crash norms, making it significantly safer than any three-wheeler. The cabin is larger, more comfortable, and can accommodate two people easily. All four wheels get independent suspension, improving ride quality across different terrains—be it potholed roads or narrow urban lanes. It’s designed for long hours of operation with improved ergonomics and driving ease.
What’s the strategy behind introducing three different variants?
We’re launching three variants—Petrol, CNG, and EV—all on a modular platform. This covers a wide spectrum of intra-city applications. There’s no diesel option, simply because in BS6 Phase 2, diesel TCOs don’t add up well for this segment. With the narrowing fuel price gap and changing customer economics, petrol, CNG, and EV make more sense.
How does Ace Pro compare with BS4-era models in terms of TCO?
TCO is broadly in the same ballpark as BS4 models, slightly better in some cases. What’s critical is that while costs have risen across the board, we’ve brought TCO back within reach with improved technology and smart powertrain choices. It’s built to be economically viable from day one.
Customer expectations are shifting—how are you staying ahead?
That’s true—just mileage and price aren't enough anymore. Customers expect more. Ace Pro delivers on those evolving needs with enhanced safety, comfort, load capacity, and drivability. The 750 kg load body, compared to 500 kg in BS4 days, makes a big difference. Add to that the independent suspension, and you’ve got a product that truly enhances productivity.
Does the Ace Pro support the demands of the quick commerce segment?
Absolutely. Quick commerce is increasingly moving to EVs, and our Ace Pro EV is the most affordable four-wheeled EV solution out there. It’s packed with all the performance and safety features, and delivers strong economics. We see a seamless migration from three-wheelers to Ace Pro EVs in this space.
Any final thoughts on driver productivity and overall impact?
Driver productivity is bound to rise. Better comfort, smoother drivability, and longer operating hours all contribute to higher utilisation. Whether for logistics, e-commerce, or last-mile delivery, Ace Pro is engineered to meet the moment—and move the segment forward.
