Greaves Cotton Limited highlighted its commitment to sustainable mobility with an impressive showcase of cutting-edge technologies at the recently concluded Bharat Mobility expo.
The company is on a mission to democratise sustainable mobility, as outlined by Vice Chairman Nagesh Basavanhalli. He emphasised the company’s focus on three key strategies: repurposing the organisation to develop clean mobility solutions, shifting from metal-based to electric and software-driven vehicles, and building a comprehensive ‘Made in India’ EV ecosystem encompassing design, engineering, manufacturing, retail, and financing. Backed by a committed capital of INR 1,500 crore, the company aims to strengthen its capabilities in manufacturing, R&D, and new product development, marking a transformative step in its 160-year legacy.
Greaves Cotton has transformed from a single-cylinder diesel engine manufacturer to a customer-centric, fuel-agnostic, multi-product, and multi-business enterprise. This transformation has led to the creation of six strategic business units. Greaves Engineering focuses on fuel-agnostic solutions, including diesel, CNG, and multi-fuel engines, bespoke prime movers, ePowertrain systems, and motion control solutions. With over 15 engine variants, the division has produced six million engines, one million gensets, and three million pump sets.

Excel, a Tier-1 supplier of motion control solutions, serves top OEMs in domestic and global markets with a comprehensive product range. Greaves Electric Mobility specialises in electric 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers for passenger and cargo mobility, leveraging 16 years of expertise. Greaves Retail operates a fuel-agnostic retail and distribution network with over 10,000 retailers and 21,500 certified mechanics providing sales and service.
Greaves Finance, a 100% EV-focused NBFC, offers customised financing solutions and is building a digital-first EV marketplace. Greaves Technologies serves as an engineering R&D and digital solutions partner supporting global OEMs, including Stellantis, Daimler Trucks Asia, and Ashok Leyland.
This diversification has significantly shifted the company’s revenue mix. In 2016, engines accounted for 80% of its business; today, they make up less than 50%, with electric mobility contributing 23%. The company has achieved revenue diversification across geographies and competencies, driven by a purpose of 'empowering lives.' In addition to its business transformation, Greaves Cotton is championing workplace diversity, with all production lines at its Aurangabad plant entirely run by women.
