In the evolving world of chemical technology, Rhein Chemie — a business unit of LANXESS — is steering its growth by blending sustainability with innovation. From ISCC PLUS-certified additives to an expanded Rhenodiv production line in Jhagadia, the company is aligning its capabilities with the demands of modern mobility.

Speaking to Mobility Outlook, Sriganesh U P, Vice President - Head of Business Unit Rhein Chemie, LANXESS India Private Limited, said, powered by a global supply network and sharp local execution, the company aims to sharpen its competitive edge and extend its market footprint. The company delivers high-performance additives, release agents, and specialty chemicals that make automotive components safer, more durable, and more efficient, while supporting the shift to greener mobility.

From antioxidants like Vulkanox, which shield rubber from oxygen and ozone damage, to accelerators such as Vulkacit that speed up vulcanisation, Rhein Chemie offers solutions for every stage of rubber production. Its product range also includes innovations like Rhenogran CLD-80, Aflux 37, and Vulcuren, which help create “green tyres” with improved fuel efficiency and lower environmental impact — a key advantage for electric and high-performance vehicles.

According to him, the latest addition, Vulkanox HS (TMQ) Scopeblue, made from 55% sustainable raw materials, offers the same proven protection as its conventional counterpart but with a carbon footprint over 30% lower. Certified under ISCC PLUS, it needs no changes in manufacturing and maintains low volatility with minimal migration, helping tyre makers meet their sustainability goals without compromising quality.

Opportunity To Innovate

Regulations like REACH, RoHS, and the EU Green Deal are reshaping the tyre and rubber industry, pushing manufacturers towards low-VOC, recyclable, and bio-based materials. For Rhein Chemie, this shift is more than compliance — it’s an opportunity to innovate.

Its sustainable portfolio includes Perkalink, which stabilises crosslinks in tyres to extend service life; Aktiplast 79, a processing aid that enables efficient recycling of rubber waste from tyres and shoe soles; and Rhenogran WP, a bio-based additive made from natural cellulose fibres. These solutions enhance durability, recyclability, and environmental performance without compromising quality, he explained.

LANXESS also uses its ‘Product Carbon Footprint’ tool to help customers choose materials that support their climate goals. By balancing cost, performance, and sustainability, and working closely with OEMs, the company is integrating greener materials into products that last longer and perform better, he mentioned.

Balancing High-performance & Cost

Sriganesh said the company tackles OEM demands for high performance at competitive costs by blending global standards with local agility. Uniform quality is ensured through strict global processes, advanced testing, and continuous improvement, so products perform consistently no matter where they’re made, he said.

To navigate supply chain volatility, the company prioritises local sourcing and manufacturing, cutting lead times and transport costs. Regional technical teams work closely with customers, offering tailored solutions and quick problem-solving for smooth integration.

Resilience is further strengthened through regionalised supply networks, sustainable sourcing strategies, and digital tools that improve forecasting, inventory control, and responsiveness. This approach keeps supply chains steady, even amid geopolitical tensions, material shortages, or global disruptions, while ensuring OEMs get reliable, high-quality products when and where they need them.

Customised Solutions Drive Growth

LANXESS navigates intense competition by focusing on customised solutions that address each region’s unique performance and regulatory needs. The emphasis is on delivering reliability, technical partnership, and local agility—helping retain high-value customers while expanding in price-sensitive markets where cost matters, but quality and compliance matter more.

With demand rising for low-VOC, bio-based, and circular products, LANXESS leverages its ESG-compliant portfolio to offer sustainable solutions that many local competitors cannot match. A zero-tolerance approach to safety and ethics, along with consistent quality, underpins its business ethos, he concluded.
