Tata Motors is reshaping the premium SUV segment with its new Harrier and Safari Adventure X and X+ variants. These offerings target a growing demand from customers seeking top-tier features and performance in the INR 18–20 lakh price band—a space that’s often overlooked.
Bridging The Gap
While options like the Jeep Compass exist, the market has seen a shortage of premium five-seaters, with an Indian OEM also discontinuing its five-seater variant. The Harrier now steps into this void, while the Safari continues to anchor the premium seven-seater space. Tata Motor’s market research showed that many customers in the INR 18–20 lakh segment desire premium styling, powerful performance, and advanced features—without crossing their affordability threshold.

Everyone likes the idea of owning a bigger car, as it often feels like a status symbol. While mid-size SUVs are great in their own way, the Harrier clearly stands out, an official from the company said at the Harrier & Safari Media Walkaround yesterday in Mumbai. Its larger size, at 4.6 metres, gives it a more commanding presence on the road and adds to its premium appeal. “It's the kind of vehicle that makes a statement,” he mentioned.
He said that more than half of all SUVs longer than 4.3 metres fall into this segment. That’s exactly why Tata Motors chose to target it with the new Harrier and Safari models. To make it easier for customers to pick the right version, the company has also simplified its line-up—cutting down Safari variants from 11 to 5, and Harrier variants from 11 to 6.
On the feedback that the company received that helped the OEM create the two new offerings, he said, customers today want more from their vehicles—more technology, more features, and greater capability. That’s become the norm. Many buyers now compare options globally, looking at brands like BYD and Tesla. One of the rising expectations is smarter, more connected personalisation—vehicles that can recognise who’s sitting inside and adjust settings automatically. It’s no longer just about design or comfort, but about intelligent tech that feels tailor-made. “Tata Motors is clearly listening to this shift and building vehicles that align with these evolving needs,” he added.

Value-Driven Pricing
Priced at Rs INR 18.99 lakh for the Harrier Adventure X and Rs 19.99 lakh for the Safari Adventure X, these are introductory prices for the diesel manual versions. The pricing has been intentionally kept below the INR 20 lakh threshold to help buyers save significantly on road tax—especially in States like Kerala where it can mean a significant difference. For instance, private vehicles with a purchase price between INR 15 lakh and INR 20 lakh, the road tax in Kerala is 17% while the same with a purchase price above INR 20 lakh is 22%. However, this advantage will go once the regular prices are introduced.
Adventure X+: Affordable ADAS Upgrade
Customers looking for more tech can choose the Adventure X+ variant. For just INR 35,000 more, it adds Level 2 ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, steering assist, and emergency braking, along with a rear disc brake. According to the company official, the Harrier Adventure X+ is priced at INR 19.34 lakh—making it one of the most affordable L2 ADAS-equipped SUVs in the market.
Direct Competition—And A Strong Edge
Tata Motors positions the Adventure X+ as a strong competitor to an SUV offered by an Indian OEM, which also offers ADAS but misses adaptive cruise control and electronic parking brake. The model, priced at INR 22.25 lakh, is roughly INR 2.5 lakh more expensive for similar (or fewer) feature.

Big Size, Bigger Appeal
Compared to mid-SUVs, the Harrier and Safari bring bigger proportions, more road presence, and greater cabin and boot space. At about 4.6 metres long and with segment-leading power figures, they present a compelling upgrade for customers moving up from compact or mid-size SUVs. New interior themes—tan and black for Safari, black and tan for Harrier—enhance their appeal. Though exterior colours are shared across variants, some themes are exclusive to Adventure X models.
Smart Packaging
Tata Motors has prioritised technology, design, and performance while keeping affordability at the forefront. Customers can also personalise their SUVs through a wide accessories portfolio—air purifiers, wireless chargers, bumper protectors, sky kits, and more. “. We have revamped everything to offer customer more premiumness”, he said.
With time-to-market being the biggest challenge, Tata Motors has brought the Adventure X range to life in just six months, showcasing its agility and customer focus. The new Harrier and Safari Adventure X twins are more than just new variants—they’re a smart response to evolving customer needs, offering premium SUVs with innovative features at significant value.
