As Volkswagen India releases its performance-oriented SUV, the Tiguan R-Line, it wants to take a new approach for the Indian customers. According to Ashish Gupta, Brand Director at Volkswagen India, the newly introduced Tiguan R-Line isn't merely an upgraded iteration of its predecessor. Instead, it is a comprehensively redeveloped third-generation model, superior in technology, and performance. The new SUV features extensive improvements including dynamic chassis control, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and robust powertrain options. Do note that this is the 200 bhp R-Line, and not the 320 bhp R from the European markets.
Performance Marketing
Acknowledging India's typically cautious acceptance of premium performance vehicles, Gupta believes that effective brand positioning is key. While recognising the SUV's higher price point—initially pegged at INR 48.99 lakh—Gupta confidently cites the vehicle's advanced capabilities and extensive features as justification. Imported under the GSR 870 regulation, Volkswagen India anticipates limited, yet significant demand, with an initial import batch of 300 units and potential future consignments.
Performance-oriented experiences could also be integrated into Volkswagen's 'We' umbrella, encompassing various driving engagements such as track events and adventure trails, although specific programmes remain dependent on consumer interest.

Regarding competition, Gupta's stance was unequivocal: the Tiguan R-Line and similar forthcoming vehicles, like the Golf GTI, target a niche market less sensitive to pricing and more attuned to brand legacy, performance credentials, and exclusivity. Adopting global supply chain components, including tyres, underlines the SUV’s international lineage and manufacturing standards, emphasising its global appeal.
The Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line is positioned as an aspirational choice for enthusiasts seeking premium performance. Despite its limited production run, Volkswagen India's approach, driven by precise customer segmentation and brand reputation, could successfully carve out a dedicated niche in India’s evolving automotive landscape.
Technical Bits
The Tiguan R-Line houses a 2.0-litre TSI EVO petrol engine, delivering 201 bhp and 320 Nm torque in this state of tune, coupled with a 7-speed DSG transmission and the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Gupta highlights the vehicle’s robust construction on the MQB EVO platform, designed to deliver refined driving dynamics and improved handling. This SUV is particularly noted for its Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC Pro), which actively adjusts suspension damping to ensure optimal stability and comfort across diverse driving conditions.

Volkswagen's latest offering includes segment-first luxury touches such as Ergo Active seats with massage and lumbar support functions, three-zone Air-Care Climatronic, and inductive charging facilities. The comprehensive infotainment system features a sizeable 38.1 cm touchscreen coupled with a 26.04 cm digital cockpit, wireless app-connectivity, and the innovative IDA voice assistant for enhanced convenience and control.
Volkswagen has equipped the vehicle with 21 advanced ADAS Level 2 features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, autonomous emergency braking, and automated parking assist. The SUV is reinforced further with nine airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, and hill start and descent control, affirming its top-tier safety credentials evidenced by a Euro NCAP 5-star rating.
