The Yamaha FZ-S FI Hybrid arrives as a quiet and understated motorcycle in India’s commuter segment. It is the first motorcycle to feature hybrid assistance in a 150 cc class. The idea is to retain the trusted 149 cc Blue Core engine, but pair it with a Smart Motor Generator (SMG) that provides Hybrid Power Assist and a Stop & Start system. This promises improved fuel efficiency, smoother low-end response and reduced strain during city commutes. On the road it delivers, although in a subtle, measured fashion rather than through dramatic performance gains.

City Agility
Designed as a fun to ride quick city commuter, FZ-S continues to be joyful. The kerb weight of 138 kg keeps it light on its feet and the 780 mm seat height makes it easy reach to the ground for most riders. We rode it through dense city streets followed by open highways, and as usual the FZ-S FI Hybrid displayed notable ease in low-speed manoeuvres. Although very subtle, the SMG’s assist was most apparent when moving off from traffic lights or tackling inclines. Basically the initial surge felt a bit smoother. But the power deficit does become evident, especially when you compare other motorcycles in the segment.

The bike was comfortable cruising up to around 70 kmph on open highways. It also has minimal vibration till 70-80 kmph and also feels stable thanks to the 1,330 mm wheelbase and radial rear tyre. Beyond that, overtaking demanded deliberate gear drops reminding you that this remains a commuter-tuned machine.

Fuel Efficiency Gains
Yamaha claims an ARAI-tested 60 kmpl on the FZ-S FI Hybrid. We rode it across multiple surfaces, and highways, and pushed it hard sometimes. You will get 40–45 kmpl easily. The Stop & Start System cuts the engine during red lights and restarts instantly with a clutch pull to further improve mileage a wee bit. For riders spending most of their time in urban stop-and-go traffic, this small gain compounds over the time.

The FZ-S FI Hybrid’s SMG is the core of its novelty. It works silently in the background, providing instantaneous electric assist during take-off and optimising engine control based on traffic load. The hybrid approach here is less about raw performance and more about refinement and efficiency.
Familiar Design With Tech Upgrades
The design keeps the muscular FZ stance that got us all hooked years ago. Its sculpted fuel tank, wide handlebar and compact tail reminds us of its athletic intent. Our test bike’s colour TFT display brought in turn-by-turn navigation via Yamaha’s Y-Connect app, alongside real-time fuel efficiency, call/SMS alerts and a hybrid assist indicator. The display is absolutely excellent with great legibility in day or night, and the easiest to use menu navigation system we’ve come across.

Other practical touches include a single-channel ABS, LED headlight and tail-light, traction control and 7-step adjustable Monocross rear suspension.

Seat Comfort
Saddle comfort is the most important bit in a commuter. Happily this little Yamaha is able to keep both the rider and pillion comfortable enough through short to medium use. Even through corner you feel confident enough with a passenger on board. Extended use in the saddle though is not that comfy. We could do with some more cushioning for comfort. The ride quality is great too. Stable and confident, it rides over rough patches with utmost ease.

Honestly, the Yamaha FZ-S FI Hybrid is not for chasing thrill-seekers. It is for practical riders who want a refined, reliable and slightly more tech-savvy commuter. Its mild hybrid system supports its honest fuel economy, and its handling remains one of the lightest and most agile in the segment.

At about INR 1.45 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), it sits over non-hybrid rivals like the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V or Hero Xtreme 160 R, both of which offer more performance for less money. It justifies its cost if you value smooth refinement, everyday efficiency and Yamaha’s reliability, but its appeal will be strongest among urban commuters rather than performance-oriented buyers.
