Ampere has launched the Reo 80, an entry-level electric scooter designed to bring basic mobility to India’s smaller towns and urban neighbourhoods. Priced at INR 59,900 (ex-showroom), the Reo 80 is part of Ampere’s broader vision to make electric vehicles common across every street and lane in the country.
Built as an upgrade to Ampere’s earlier Reo model, the new Reo 80 maintains a top speed below 25 kmph, which allows it to be operated without a driving licence or registration, lowering the entry barriers for ownership. This aspect positions the scooter as a convenient and legally uncomplicated option for younger riders and first-time users. The vehicle’s design leans heavily towards function over form, with a dual-tone colour palette, alloy wheels for a slightly premium touch, and a front disc brake for improved stopping power.
A notable inclusion is the use of a safer LFP battery (Lithium Iron Phosphate), known for better thermal stability and longevity compared to conventional lithium-ion alternatives. The scooter offers a modest range of 80 kilometres on a single charge, which suits its intended role for short commutes within city limits. Ampere has also equipped the Reo 80 with a coloured LCD cluster and a keyless start feature with a premium key fob, which while not revolutionary, adds a touch of convenience and appeal for budget-conscious buyers.
K Vijaya Kumar, Executive Director and CEO, Greaves Electric Mobility, emphasised the importance of safety, affordability and daily utility as the foundation of this new model. The scooter is expected to begin deliveries nationwide in April 2025.
