Leading global supplier to the mobility sector, BorgWarner has won two major orders in the Chinese automotive market.

In the first order, the company will supply high-voltage hairpin (HVH) eMotors to a leading electric vehicle brand in China, while it has also bagged an order to supply a leading Chinese OEM with its highly efficient dual inverter unit for the automaker’s A/A+ hybrid vehicle model slated for launch in Q2 2023.

In two separate releases, Dr Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems expressed his excitement in being able to continue BorgWarner’s partnership with the Chinese automakers.

HVH eMotors

The 800 V oil-cooled eMotors are available as either motor assemblies or stator and rotor sub-assemblies, said BorgWarner. The eMotors will be used in the Chinese company’s second-generation 800 V propulsion system platform, which will form the basis of a vehicle model that is expected to start mass production in October 2023.

These eMotors feature built-in, permanent magnet rotor and proprietary stator insulation enhancement technologies, providing premium durability and reliability. The company claims that these eMotors deliver peak efficiency of over 96% and feature patented HVH stator winding technology. Energy efficient and environmentally friendly, these motors deliver up to 4% higher power and torque density compared to other products of its breed, the company claimed.

During vehicle braking and downhill, the motor can also convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and charge the battery through the inverter, the company said.

The company had recently acquired Santroll Automotive Components, a carve-out of Santroll’s light vehicle eMotor business, which is expected to further strengthen BorgWarner’s vertical integration, scale and portfolio breadth in light vehicle e-motors while allowing for increased speed to market.

Dual Inverter

Meanwhile, in another significant development that further expands its hybrid system applications, BorgWarner would be supplying dual inverter for a Leading Chinese OEM. In the dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) segment in China, this technology is expected to deliver multi-functionality, cost and weight reduction, flexible packaging and easy installation, said the company.

This is a highly-integrated product that combines two inverters, a DC/DC converter, and a boost module into a single unit, thus being able to unrivaled functionality, driving two electric motors, powering the 12 V electrical system, and supporting the boosted system architecture of the propulsion system, BorgWarner claimed.

The system essentially combines several power electronic technologies into one compact package, which results in cost and weight reductions, in addition to aiding flexible packaging and easy installation.

As a key element of the hybrid system, BorgWarner’s dual inverter manages propulsion and energy recuperation, and ensures that the system works in an optimal range of efficiency.

Dr Demmerle said, “This leading Chinese OEM’s DHT system is becoming a strong benchmark in the China market due to its dynamic driving performance and ability to achieve greater fuel economy. This partnership will aid us in continuing to lead the DHT and hybrid inverter technology spaces.”
