Eastman Auto & Power Ltd (EAPL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vande Bharat E-Vehicles to supply lithium-ion batteries worth INR 50 crore annually. The partnership is designed to accelerate the use of sustainable energy solutions in the country’s electric three-wheeler segment, particularly through battery leasing models that cater to commercial and fleet operations.
The collaboration will see Eastman supply its advanced lithium-ion battery systems to power the growing fleet of electric rickshaws operated by Vande Bharat E-Vehicles, also known as Sahanianand E-Vehicles Pvt Ltd. This aligns with the government’s larger objective of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting zero-emission transport across Indian cities.
Shekhar Singal, Managing Director, Eastman, pointed to the potential of lithium-ion batteries to offer reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible power to a large segment of India’s informal and small-scale transport sector. Sumit Anand, Director, Vande Bharat E-Vehicles, highlighted the importance of cost-effective and sustainable solutions in improving livelihoods while pushing forward national carbon reduction targets.
This alliance also reflects a growing industry trend of vertical collaboration in the electric mobility ecosystem, with energy storage companies and vehicle manufacturers joining hands to overcome key adoption barriers such as battery costs and infrastructure. With a focus on battery leasing, the companies aim to offer a more accessible model for small operators and drivers who form the backbone of last-mile and urban logistics in India.
