Embedded software and Edge AI company - embedUR systems has unveiled a compact Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Sensing Edge AI solution built on NXP Semiconductors’ Trimension NCJ29D6 platform.
The NXP Trimension NCJ29D6 is a fully integrated UWB transceiver IC tailored for automotive use cases like secure vehicle access and radar-based sensing. It combines Digital Key functionality with capabilities such as Child Presence Detection (CPD) and kick-sensing for trunk access. By integrating ranging and radar into a single chip, the platform reduces system complexity and cost.
embedUR’s contribution is a lightweight UWB Gesture and Motion Recognition AI model optimized for the Trimension platform. At just 215 KB, the model enables real-time gesture recognition directly on the edge, providing fast and secure interaction without the need for cloud connectivity.
Key automotive applications of this solution include hands-free trunk operation via hand or foot gestures and intuitive gesture-based controls for starting or stopping automated parking. The versatility of the platform extends beyond vehicles, with potential applications in smart homes, consumer electronics, and industrial automation.
Eric Smiley, VP of Business Development at embedUR, said, “By combining UWB with Edge AI, we’re enabling practical, safe, and intuitive hands-free interactions. This work illustrates how compact, efficient models can deliver powerful results on memory- and power-constrained devices.”
Michael Leitner, General Manager for Secure Car Access at NXP, added, “embedUR’s expertise in edge AI and wireless sensing allows them to fully leverage the capabilities of our UWB devices. Their results in gesture-based sensing are promising, and we look forward to more applications using our IC.”
The company’s strong background in embedded systems and AI model optimisation enables them to deliver high-performance AI solutions in tight memory budgets. The company has previously deployed real-time image segmentation and facial recognition models on ultra-light edge devices, demonstrating its ability to balance size, speed, and accuracy in demanding environments.
