Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), in collaboration with IIT Madras and guided by the Tamil Nadu government, today unveiled the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre, a 65,000 sq ft research hub dedicated to green hydrogen technology.
The centre, located at IIT Madras’s Discovery Satellite Campus in Thaiyur, Chennai, marks the first phase of HMIL’s INR 100 crore investment—partially funded through Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF)—to advance sustainable energy solutions in India.
Built with state-of-the-art computational labs, experimental setups, digital-twin systems for hydrogen infrastructure, and pilot testing areas for electrolyzers and fuel cells, the centre aims to spearhead the evaluation and deployment of industrial-scale hydrogen systems.
Key Highlights:
- Strategic Collaboration: Unveiled by Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, the Centre aligns with national ambitions for indigenous hydrogen production and carbon neutrality.
- Technology & Capacity Focus: HMIL’s MD, Unsoo Kim, emphasized HTWO’s role in fostering local talent and scalable hydrogen solutions as part of the “Make in India” initiative.
- Institutional Backing: IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti highlighted the hub's role in bolstering India’s self-reliance and supporting the country’s decarbonization goals.
Stakeholders present included senior representatives from HMIL, IIT Madras, Korea’s consulate in Chennai, and leading research institutions like CSIR-NCL.
As part of Hyundai Motor Group’s global HTWO brand—focusing on hydrogen production, storage, and fuel cell applications—the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre offers an open platform for academia, industry, and policymakers. The hub supports India’s journey toward an Atmanirbhar, Viksit Bharat, and the government’s Net Zero 2070 vision, while also nurturing a skilled hydrogen workforce and accelerating a viable domestic hydrogen ecosystem.
