Hyundai To Launch Six BEVs By 2028; Announces New Dedicated BEV Platform

The line-up of BEVs will cater to multiple segments, including the Mass and Mass Premium segments in India, and will be introduced in different body styles, including SUVs.

In what can be termed its biggest commitment yet to sustainable mobility in the country, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) has announced that by 2028, the company would launch in the market six new battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The company also said it would introduce its dedicated BEV platform, E-GMP, in India.

Hyundai Motor India also plans to invest approximately INR 4,000 crore for R&D towards the expansion of the six BEVs, the company said.  

With the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the South Korean automaker aims to pioneer the development of future EVs. The platform comprises of a vehicle chassis that includes the battery, motor and power electric system. This is a big showcase of Hyundai Motor Group’s intent globally in building a new era for the brand.

With scalable dimensions, this platform will form the backbone of different types of vehicles. Vehicles developed on E-GMP will have an innovative interior packaging and will feature a flat floor, slim cockpit and a flexible & spacious cabin. The new platform has been built on four key pillars, including modularity, reliability, usability and performance. 

The platform can facilitate many body types, feature a modularised battery system and create greater synergies with BEV component sharing. It features a low centre of gravity, uses Ultra High Strength Steel and eight-point battery mounting. The flat floor and flexible seating layout in the E-GMP platform offers innovative interior space that features a sliding console and sliding 2nd row seats. 

From a performance standpoint, the new platform features a large battery capacity up to 77.4 kWh, 2WD/ 4WD capabilities, improved handling and capability to achieve a top speed of 260 kmph.

Announcing the line-up of six BEVs for India, the company said these vehicles will cater to multiple segments, including the Mass and Mass Premium segments in India, and will be introduced in different body styles, including SUVs.

Notably, Hyundai was the first manufacturer to introduce an electric SUV in the country with the launch of KONA Electric in 2019.

The company also shared its commitment to work towards the development of BEV infrastructure and widespread adoption of BEVs in India with strategic collaborations. Hyundai’s BEV charging solutions will include home charging, public charging station, charging facility at HMIL dealer network and 24x7 road side assistance.
