IndiGo Appoints Dr Venkataramani Sumantran As Its Chairman

The move comes in as Meleveetil Damodaran steps down from the position after turning 75. Dr Sumantran was earlier an Independent Non-Executive Director of the Board since May 28, 2020

 IndiGo has appointed Dr. Venkataramani Sumantran as its chairman. 

An Independent Non-Executive Director of the Board since May 28, 2020, he succeeds Meleveetil Damodaran, who  stepped down as an Independent Non-Executive Director on May 3, 2022.

An Alumnus of IIT Madras, Dr. Sumantran then went on to acquire a PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Master’s degree in Management of Technology and his working career in the USA, Europe, and Asia, spans over 37 years. 

Dr. Sumantran had also obtained his private pilot’s licence at the age of 19. 

He is currently Chairman and Managing Director of Celeris Technologies and also serves on the Boards of Rane Holdings Limited, and TVS Electronics.

He has held various important corporate appointments such as Vice-Chairman of Hinduja Automotive (UK) and the Vice Chairman of Ashok Leyland; Executive Director at Tata Motors Limited and Chief Executive of the Passenger Car Business during its formative years and has also been Director, Advanced Engineering at General Motors, Europe.

Most recently, he served as the Lead-Member of the Consultative Group on Future Transportation at the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.
