Maruti Suzuki has begun admissions for the first batch of students at its newly established Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Sonipat, Haryana. This is the company's fourth institute in the country and its second in the state. With an annual intake of more than 100 students, the new training centre aims to provide structured vocational education across four key trades, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Machinist, Welder and Fitter, starting September 2025. The company has committed over INR 10 crore towards developing the facility.
The JIM at Sonipat is affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training and is accredited by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It will adopt a dual training model that blends theoretical instruction with practical learning through on-the-job training. The programme is designed to equip students with industry-relevant skills, not only through the standard curriculum but also through modules focused on safety, quality control, discipline and Japanese manufacturing principles such as Kaizen and 5S. These additions are expected to offer students a deeper understanding of workplace standards that are crucial in the automotive sector.
This initiative has been supported by the Government of Haryana, which has provided land and infrastructure for the institute. Maruti Suzuki has stepped in to upgrade the facilities, supply industrial equipment, build an assembly line for hands-on training, and oversee daily operations. The arrangement represents a public-private model aimed at creating a steady pipeline of skilled workers who can meet the evolving demands of Indian industry.
