Maruti Suzuki India Limited has marked a new high in its commitment to sustainable logistics by dispatching 5.18 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in FY 2024-25—the company’s highest-ever rail-based dispatch volume in a single financial year.
Since FY15, the company has increased its rail dispatch volume nearly eightfold, reaffirming the importance of rail transport in its logistics operations. A key enabler of this growth was the inauguration of India’s first in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024. This strategic infrastructure enables direct loading of vehicles onto trains, enhancing operational efficiency while reducing carbon footprint.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki operates over 40 flexi deck rakes—each capable of transporting approximately 300 vehicles per trip—serving more than 20 hubs across the country. From these hubs, vehicles are distributed to over 600 cities. The railway network also supports the company’s export operations through the port terminals of Mundra and Pipavav.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Maruti Suzuki was the first company in India to secure an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence in 2013. Since then, we have transported nearly 24 lakh vehicles by rail. By FY 2030-31, we aim to increase the share of vehicles dispatched via rail to 35%.”
