Matter has introduced the Aera, India’s first electric motorcycle equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission, in New Delhi. Priced at INR 1,93,826 ex-showroom, the Aera enters the national capital as part of the company’s phased rollout ahead of the upcoming festive season. The Aera’s key differentiator lies in its four-speed HyperShift gearbox which has developed entirely in-house. Unlike most electric two-wheelers that rely on direct drive or automatic transmission, the inclusion of a manual gearbox allows riders to engage more directly with the vehicle’s power delivery. Matter says this feature offers a riding experience closer to that of petrol-powered motorcycles, bridging the familiarity gap for users transitioning to electric models.
In addition to the gearbox, the Aera features a liquid-cooled powertrain, another uncommon element in the current EV two-wheeler segment. This system supports consistent performance across varied weather and riding conditions, which is expected to be particularly beneficial in climates like Delhi’s. The motorbike also integrates connected technology, offering access to ride data and system diagnostics through a digital interface, although specific app features and interface details have not been fully disclosed.
The decision to launch in Delhi reflects both commercial ambition and symbolic intent. As a city that influences policy and consumer trends, Delhi presents a relevant starting point for a product that aims to reshape perceptions of electric motorcycles. Arun Pratap Singh, Founder and COO, Matter, described the Aera as a vehicle for progress, noting that it merges innovation with environmental necessity in a city that continues to face serious air quality concerns.
The launch in Delhi is expected to be followed by availability in other metro cities, although timelines have not been formally confirmed.
