Novelis Inc., a global leader in flat-rolled aluminium production and the world’s largest aluminium recycler, has achieved a significant milestone by producing the world’s first-ever aluminium coil made entirely from 100% recycled, end-of-life automotive scrap. Developed for the European automotive market, this innovation marks a significant leap towards sustainability and circularity in vehicle manufacturing.
Collaboration For Circularity
The aluminium scrap used for this pioneering product was sourced through the Automotive Circularity Platform (ACP), initiated in partnership with Thyssenkrupp Materials Services. ACP is designed to enhance material recovery from end-of-life vehicles by digitalizing the secondary materials market, streamlining supply chain efficiencies, and maximizing recycling opportunities.

Novelis is now working towards scaling up this breakthrough technology, aiming to help automakers integrate higher recycled content into future vehicle designs. Currently, the company supplies aluminium with up to 85% recycled content, leveraging closed-loop recycling systems and strategic collaborations with recyclers and material suppliers.
Recycling aluminium remains the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to primary aluminium production, reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption by approximately 95%. By increasing the use of end-of-life aluminium scrap, Novelis aims to further decrease reliance on virgin materials while promoting a more circular and resource-efficient automotive industry.
