
In a major cross-industry collaboration, leading smart device brand OPPO has announced a global patent licensing agreement with Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft to license its portfolio of cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs), including 5G technologies.
This marks OPPO’s first bilateral patent licensing deal with a connected car company, signalling the expansion of its cellular innovations beyond smartphones into the automotive domain. Under the agreement, Volkswagen will access OPPO’s cutting-edge 5G SEPs to improve the performance and connectivity of its vehicles worldwide.
According to LexisNexis IPlytics, OPPO ranked eighth globally in overall 5G patent strength as of January 2025. The company currently holds over 62,000 granted patents globally and has filed more than 113,000 patent applications. Its technologies are distributed across more than 40 countries and regions, with continuous investment in key innovation areas such as 5G/6G, AI, charging, imaging, and video.
