Prime Minister Narendra Modi today commemorated the start of production of Maruti Suzuki’s first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the eVITARA, at Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt Ltd (SMG).
Alongside, Maruti Suzuki’s subsidiary TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat Pvt Ltd (TDSG) launched India’s first locally manufactured lithium-ion battery cells and electrodes for strong hybrid vehicles. These will power hybrid systems in models like the Grand Vitara, marking a breakthrough in localisation and self-reliance in the EV supply chain.
Speaking on the occasion, Toshihiro Suzuki, President, Suzuki Motor Corporation, said these milestones are a testament to Indo-Japanese collaboration and India’s Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. “We will deliver products and technologies that reduce oil consumption and emissions, from BEVs and strong hybrids to natural gas and biofuel vehicles,” he added.
The eVITARA, previewed earlier in Milan and at Bharat Mobility Expo, will soon be exported to markets across Europe including the UK, Germany, France, and Italy. With this launch, Maruti Suzuki has set a bold precedent for Indian EV manufacturing on a global scale.
