Praj Industries and ICT have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a centre of excellence and innovation (CoEI) For biopolymers.

The MoU was signed by Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman of Praj Industries (Praj) and Aniruddha Pandit, Vice Chancellor of ICT in Mumbai.

Dubbed Parimal And Pramod Chaudhari Centre Of Excellence and Innovation For Biopolymers, it will undertake research, promote the academic pursuit and explore newer applications, said Chaudhari. Biopolymer, an important element in renewable chemicals and materials, is produced from agricultural resources and can be used as a sustainable alternative to plastic.

“Together with ICT we intend to accelerate the transition to a carbohydrate-based economy by unleashing the huge application potential of biopolymers,” said Chaudhari.

The centre will take up application development of bioplastics — PHA and PLA —as its first collaborative project. Bio-Mobility platform of biofuels for decarbonatisation of the transportation sector and Bio-Prism portfolio of technologies for the production of RCM (recycling cycle of materials) for carbon recycling are Praj’s flagship offerings.

“This is the future of renewable polymers, both of biological origin and biodegradable. The joining of forces by ICT and Praj is complementary and a great multiplier,' said Pandit.
