Skoda Auto is actively evaluating CNG as a powertrain option for the Indian market. While a concrete timeline hasn’t been announced, the company has confirmed that it is assessing the compatibility of its 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine with CNG fuel systems as part of its broader strategy for India.
This marks a step forward from Skoda’s earlier stance during the launch of the Kylaq SUV last year, when the company expressed openness to CNG but held off citing a lack of volume potential. However, the market dynamics have since shifted, with nearly every carmaker offering CNG options in the same price segment — including Tata, which recently introduced a CNG variant of the turbocharged Nexon, proving such combinations are viable.
The 1.0-litre TSI unit, which currently produces 118bhp and 175Nm, could see a drop in performance to around 100bhp and 160Nm when adapted for CNG. Despite this, it would still present a competitive and efficient offering, though the added weight of a CNG tank will also factor into the overall package dynamics. Skoda’s move, if finalised, could broaden its appeal in the value-conscious and eco-aware Indian car market.
