Sterling Tools Limited has made a strategic leap into rare earth magnet-free traction motors for electric vehicles. Through its EV-focused subsidiary, Sterling Gtake E-Mobility (SGEM), the company has signed a technology licensing agreement with UK-based Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) Ltd to produce these advanced motors at its Faridabad facility.
The patented AEM technology enables the manufacture of high-performance traction motors without rare earth magnets—offering an efficient, sustainable alternative to conventional motors without compromising on weight or size. This move is aimed at reducing India’s reliance on China-dominated permanent magnet supply chains, aligning with the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India goals.
SGEM will now cater to all key segments of the EV traction motor market, which is projected to reach INR 15,000 crore by 2030. The agreement also includes plans for co-developing integrated motor-controller solutions, addressing the growing trend of consolidated EV sub-systems. By offering these technologies domestically, Sterling Tools is not only promoting import substitution but also strengthening the local EV ecosystem with high-tech, scalable powertrain solutions.
Anil Aggarwal, Chairman, Sterling Tools Limited, said, “This foray into rare earth magnet-free motors underscores our commitment to innovation and industry leadership. By expanding beyond MCUs into full EV powertrain solutions, we aim to support OEMs with high-quality, indigenous technology backed by strong technical support.”
Dr James Widmer, CEO of Advanced Electric Machines, noted, “India presents vast potential for clean mobility, and our collaboration with Sterling Tools is a crucial step in delivering high-performance, sustainable powertrains that meet both environmental and industrial self-reliance goals.”
With EV adoption on the rise, this partnership positions Sterling Tools at the forefront of next-generation electric mobility solutions—delivering advanced technology, supporting local manufacturing, and accelerating India’s transition to clean transport.
