In a significant development for India’s energy transition, TruAlt Bioenergy Limited, the country’s largest ethanol producer and a leading integrated biofuels company, has received authorisation as an Oil Marketing Company (OMC).

This makes TruAlt one of the first private biofuel firms in India to secure OMC status, positioning it alongside major petroleum players. The company plans to offer a blended retail experience by co-locating conventional fuels with renewables—ethanol blends, Bio-CNG, EV charging stations, and battery swapping—in a model aligned with India’s clean energy goals.

The company will initially launch over 100 fuel stations in Karnataka and Maharashtra, with a mandate to establish at least 5% of its outlets in remote areas. This expansion is expected to create over 2,000 jobs and promote rural development by sourcing agri-residue and biomass from local communities, reinforcing TruAlt’s “farm-to-fuel” circular economy model.

Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, called the milestone “a defining step” in TruAlt’s journey, enabling it to serve India’s fuel needs while focusing on cleaner energy solutions. With a 7% share in molasses-based ethanol and 3.7% in total ethanol supply, the company plays a critical role in India’s Ethanol Blending Programme. It is also rapidly expanding its presence in the compressed biogas segment.

Amid rising energy demand and a clear policy push for cleaner alternatives, India recorded its highest-ever petroleum product consumption in FY25 at 239.5 MMT. Petrol use has seen a CAGR of 7.7% over the past decade, while ethanol blending has reached 18.4%—closing in on the 20% national target.

In a further move up the biofuels value chain, the company is also planning to set up a 10-crore-litre Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant, aiming to become one of the world’s largest SAF producers from ethanol and putting India on the global map for green aviation fuels.
