Visteon’s decision to begin manufacturing high-resolution automotive cameras and backlight units at its Chennai facility marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s position as a core technology and production hub in the global automotive landscape. With an initial investment of USD 10 million, the company has commenced in-house production of next-generation analogue and digital camera systems ranging from 1.3 MP to 8 MP resolution, alongside display backlight units designed for modern cockpit electronics. This move is aimed at delivering sharper imaging and stronger integration with driver assistance systems such as ADAS.

The cameras will support a range of safety functions including parking assistance and improved manoeuvrability, contributing to a more intuitive and secure driving experience. At a time when global carmakers are prioritising both safety and connectivity, such localisation efforts not only improve the quality and supply agility of critical components but also reflect an alignment with broader automotive trends.

Sachin Lawande, CEO, Visteon, stated that by localising the production of these core systems, Visteon is enhancing its capacity to scale and innovate. The decision also reduces reliance on imports and allows faster adaptation to regional market requirements, thereby sharpening India’s competitiveness in high-end automotive technology.
