Volvo Cars has announced an expanded partnership with Google to fast-track the rollout of the latest Android Automotive OS innovations, including the integration of Google Gemini, Google’s advanced conversational AI.

As part of this enhanced collaboration, Volvo vehicles will serve as reference hardware platforms for future Android in-car development. This means Volvo will act as a lead partner in testing new Android features and updates before they are rolled out to the wider automotive ecosystem.

A key highlight of the announcement is the upcoming introduction of Google Gemini in the car, replacing the current Google Assistant in Volvo models with Google built-in. Launching later this year, Gemini will allow drivers to engage in natural, intuitive conversations—to compose and translate messages, query the car’s user manual, or get contextual details about destinations. By offering intelligent responses through seamless dialogue, Gemini aims to reduce driver distraction and cognitive load, enhancing safety and user experience.

Beyond the in-car experience, the expanded partnership ensures that Volvo customers will be among the first to receive the latest Android features and performance enhancements, reinforcing the brand’s position at the forefront of automotive software innovation.

Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google, “For years, Google and Volvo Cars have collaborated closely to bring cutting-edge technology to connected cars. We're excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry.”

Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars, said, “We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is essential. This partnership with Google allows us to bring the very latest features from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products first. Together, we’re shaping the future of connected cars.”
