In a landmark move aimed at reshaping the future of commercial mobility, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck have officially launched Coretura AB, a joint venture focused on developing a standardised, software-defined vehicle platform that promises to become a new benchmark for the global commercial vehicle industry.

The initiative stems from binding agreements signed on October 28, 2024, and signals a strategic pivot by two of the industry's largest players towards building the digital foundations for tomorrow's trucks and buses. Coretura’s mission is to decouple software and hardware development cycles, enabling commercial vehicle manufacturers and customers to benefit from agile, updateable digital services via a shared, open, and scalable vehicle operating system.

Karin Rådström, President and CEO of Daimler Truck, “This is a big and really exciting step—not just for us, but for the entire industry. With Coretura, we’re setting a clear strategic focus on software, making commercial vehicles smarter, more connected, and more efficient than ever before.”

Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of the Volvo Group, stated, “Coretura represents a bold step forward. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and collaborative innovation, we're setting the stage for a new era of connectivity and sustainable transportation.”

Heading Coretura is Johan Lundén, former head of Strategic Product Planning and Innovation Management at Volvo Group, who now takes charge as CEO. He will lead a lean four-member executive team—split equally between both parent companies—as the company starts operations with an initial team of about 50 employees, scaling progressively based on development milestones.

Coretura’s core objective is to build the non-differentiating digital backbone for commercial vehicles: a dedicated software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform and operating system designed to handle massive data loads while enabling seamless over-the-air updates. By overseeing the specification and sourcing of high-performance vehicle control units, Coretura aims to unlock continuous innovation while simplifying the integration of future-ready applications focused on safety, efficiency, and user experience.

Positioned as a start-up with deep industry roots, Coretura blends entrepreneurial agility with the strength of its founding partners. The venture welcomes collaboration, signalling openness to traditional and emerging suppliers and technology partners aligned with its vision of open innovation.

While Coretura creates the digital foundation, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck will continue to operate as competitors in the marketplace, each maintaining its own differentiated product and service strategies.

As the commercial vehicle industry pivots to a software-first paradigm, Coretura marks a bold response—an ecosystem-driven platform that enables scalability, accelerates digital adoption, and positions its stakeholders at the forefront of a software-defined future.
