ZF’s CeTrax electric central drive has reached a significant production milestone, with the 10,000th unit rolling off the assembly line in May. Designed with an open-technology philosophy, CeTrax is compatible with both battery-electric and fuel-cell systems, offering flexibility to commercial vehicle manufacturers.

Launched into series production in 2019, just two years after its debut at the Busworld trade fair, CeTrax offers a fully integrated solution with inverter, electronic control unit, and proprietary ZF software. With a continuous output of 175 kW, it is well-suited to meet the challenges of demanding urban landscapes. A key strength of CeTrax lies in its compatibility with existing diesel vehicle platforms, making it an ideal choice for OEMs aiming to electrify conventional models.

As cities and municipalities increasingly adopt electrified public transport, demand for CeTrax has grown from niche volumes to industrial-scale production, with several thousand units now built annually. ZF is set to introduce the next-generation CeTrax 2 in mid-2026, built on a new e-mobility platform offering enhanced integration and performance for the evolving needs of the commercial vehicle sector.

Winfried Gründler, Senior Vice President, Driveline Technology, ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions, said, 'This milestone for CeTrax shows how an innovative concept coupled with product quality and reliability pays off in the form of production volumes. The success of CeTrax lays the foundation for the next generation of e-drives for vehicles weighing up to 44 tonne.”
