In a bid to upskill Indian mechanics through a competitive national platform, leading lubricant manufacturer Castrol India, in partnership with the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) announced the winners of the fourth edition of its Super Mechanic Contest.

The winners were felicitated by Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Sandeep Sangwan, Managing Director, Castrol India and Barun Das, CEO, TV9 Network.

After a break of almost two years due to the pandemic, the fourth edition of the contest was conducted using physical and digital media to ensure maximum participation from mechanics across India.

Launched back in September 2021, the 2021-22 edition of the contest reported participation from more than 140,000 mechanics through the contest’s Interactive Voice Response (IVR) round and a dedicated website. The top 50 participants competed in an on-ground finale spread over three days from April 5-7, 2022.

According to a release from the lubricant maker, the contest included a range of new digital tools and features, including a mobile game to enable participating mechanics to master various assignments and challenges.

The specially designed curriculum covered new-age vehicle diagnostics, digital tools for next-generation vehicles, and BS-VI technology, among others. The masterclasses were attended by over 24,000 mechanics spread across the country, the release noted.

Sangwan said, “We have used this platform to inspire them to constantly upgrade their knowledge and skills in line with changing industry standards.”

He further added that with the advent of EVs in the industry, the company is also looking at ways to add an e-mobility perspective to the contest. At the same time, the Minister noted that the mechanic community is a pivotal component of India’s automotive sector.

Harnessing their talents and sharpening their skills in a systematic and organised manner can play a very important role in expanding their livelihood opportunities, allowing them to venture into changing times with confidence and competence, he added.
