SUN Mobility

SUN Mobility, a leading provider of energy infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs), has announced a strategic collaboration and joint venture with Indian Oil, a major diversified energy company. The partnership aims to establish one of the largest battery swapping infrastructure networks by 2030.

Over the past year, the company has partnered with Bounce Infinity, Bluwheelz, Swiggy, and Zomato to offer battery swapping, Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solutions.

The joint venture with Indian Oil plans to scale up to over 10,000 battery swapping stations across 40 plus cities in the next three years. This initiative will support the adoption of electric mobility for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and small four-wheel vehicles by offering a convenient 'Battery as a Service' (BaaS) mobility solution.

Currently, SUN Mobility supports over 25,000 electric vehicles in India across 20 cities, utilising more than 630 stations and 50,000+ smart batteries. These facilities perform over a million battery swaps per month, serving a variety of two and three-wheeler customers.

Chetan Maini, Co-Founder & Chairman of SUN Mobility, stated, “Seven years ago, SUN Mobility was founded on the premise of making electric vehicles affordable, reducing range anxiety, and minimising charging time. Since then, we have created the world’s leading open architecture platform for battery swapping that supports various EV form factors across multiple OEMs.”

This strategic joint venture combines Indian Oil’s extensive network of over 37,000 fuel stations with SUN Mobility’s advanced battery swapping technology. It aims to make EV battery swapping as accessible as conventional fuel stations, enhancing the EV customer experience by addressing concerns related to battery cost, maintenance, replacement, and charging time.

Existing Partnerships

Over the past year, the company has established partnerships with several start-ups to offer a variety of solutions. For instance, it has teamed up with Revfin to boost EV adoption in India. This partnership focused on providing innovative financing solutions for EV fleets and passenger vehicles, integrated with its BaaS model.

The company associated with Bounce Infinity to undertake EV deployment – deploying 30,000 Bounce Infinity Scooters in key markets across the country, starting with Bangalore and Hyderabad and extending to Mumbai, Pune and Delhi NCR. The company deployed these 2-wheelers under both BaaS and MaaS models.

SUN Mobility has partnered with Bluwheelz for battery swapping solutions based on BaaS and MaaS. Accordingly, the company has been deploying over 15,000 electric two-wheelers and 1,000 electric three-wheelers in all metropolitan cities. It also planned to retrofit BluWheelz's existing 4-wheeler loader fleet into electric, with a plan to retrofit about 1,000 vehicles.

The company has partnered with Swiggy to offer EVs as last-mile delivery operations. With access to 15,000 e-bikes by Swiggy delivery executives, they can swap batteries at SUN Mobility stations.

SUN Mobility has also entered into an association with Zomato to power 50k e-2Ws across India over the next 2 years, using its battery swap solutions for last-mile deliveries.
