Tata Motors on Wednesday launched the Tiago EV starting at INR 8.49 lakh, ex-showroom, for the base XE trim level. The introductory prices are for the first 8,000 customers and 2,000 existing EV owners.

The company plans to open bookings on October 10 with deliveries scheduled to begin from January 2023. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said it would prioritise meeting demand in these three months to reduce the waiting period.

The Tiago EV is being offered with two battery pack options: a 19.2 kWh lithium-ion pack with an estimated MIDC range of 250 km while the higher IP67 rated 24kWh battery packs offer 315 km.

The new hatch gets a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that can propel it from zero to 60 kmph in 5.7 seconds. It also features the company’s Zconnect with 45 features such as remote ac control, geo fencing and real time charge status. The Tiago EV is available in five color options.

EV Ecosystem

Since the time Tata Motors launched the Nexon EV in 2020, it has been the leader in this space with over 45,000 EVs on the road in the personal and fleet segment. According to Chandra, the initial days saw 25% of Nexon customers opting to use it as their primary ride and this share has now increased to 80%.

This was thanks to the company’s constant efforts in creating an ecosystem for these new age vehicles to reduce ‘range anxiety’. Joining hands with Tata Power for charging stations on highways has also made intercity travel comfortable. Nearly 200 society EV chargers have also been installed across Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.

Vivek B Srivatsa, Head Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy, said the company plans to extend its EV reach to 165 cities from 90. Plans are also in place to have exclusive EV service centres.
