Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IORA Ecological Solutions, a leading environmental advisory firm in India.

The company operates the world’s largest aluminium plant in Jharsuguda, a world-class alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha, and mining operations within the state. It also includes BALCO, an iconic aluminium producer based in Korba, Chhattisgarh. It produced over 2.37 million tonne of aluminium in FY24, accounting for more than half of India’s aluminium production.

IORA, founded in 2009, specialises in natural resource conservation, carbon forestry, and climate change mitigation. Under this partnership, IORA will support Vedanta Aluminium in developing and implementing projects focused on managing local biodiversity and ecosystems. This includes identifying, designing, and managing technology-led climate mitigation projects aligned with global sustainability efforts and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The company plans to collaborate with local communities and stakeholders to implement nature-based climate offset and biodiversity management projects. These initiatives will be launched near the company’s operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, expanding on-ground engagement with local communities through organised forums, capacity-building programmes, and grassroots biodiversity and nature conservation practices. The goal is to integrate viable nature-positive actions into all aspects of Vedanta Aluminium’s operations.

John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “We are integrating sustainability into every aspect of our decision-making process, measuring success by the positive socio-economic changes and environmental stewardship we achieve. We focus on enhancing resource efficiencies, circular economy practices, and inclusive community partnerships for a sustainable future, committed to reaching Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.”

Swapan Mehra, CEO of IORA Ecological Solutions, added, “Vedanta’s efforts will surely inspire its peers in the global business landscape, spurring transformative impacts across the industry.”
