ZF LIFETEC, a leading passive safety technology provider for enhanced protection of vehicle occupants, has introduced a new generation of steering wheel, enhancing design possibilities for future-oriented interiors. Contrary to the conventional method where the driver airbags deploy from the centre of the steering wheel, ZF LIFETEC's new design repositions the airbag to deploy from the top side of the steering wheel, through the upper rim towards the driver.
This innovative placement allows for a seamless, smartphone-like design of the horizontal spoke and hub, integrating force-sensitive controls for entertainment and assistance functions behind a continuous surface. This approach blends effortlessly with the digital dashboards of contemporary vehicles.
“With this new concept, we are enabling design freedom for steering wheels without compromising safety,” said Harald Lutz, Head of Development at ZF LIFETEC.
Enhanced Functionality
The trend towards seamless design is evident in modern vehicle interiors, characterised by the elimination of joints and gaps. This is reflected in innovative lighting options and integrated displays throughout the vehicle. ZF LIFETEC's new steering wheel design aligns with this trend, offering greater integration of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) functions and new surface materials.
The seamless design not only enhances aesthetics but also expands functional possibilities. On-demand functions, touch displays, and even central screens can be incorporated. Despite these advancements, user-friendliness remains paramount due to the steering wheel's critical safety role. Hybrid solutions, such as a combination of rotary switches with force-sensitive and tactile surfaces, ensure safe operation.

Incorporating current and future steering wheel technologies, ZF LIFETEC's design includes hands-on detection through capacitive sensors under the leather surface. These sensors distinguish between mere touch and a firm grip, adding another layer of safety. This technology is a crucial component for maintaining safe vehicle control.
