Nirmala Behera, Executive Director – Group HR, RSB Group talks about the transition she made from quality systems and IT to human resources, and how that groomed her into a better leader.

For the past 22 years, Nirmala Behera has been with the RSB Group striving hard to make RSB a 'great organisation to work with.' She is passionate about implementing strategic HR initiatives to enable the effectiveness of business functions and aiding the group to make a quantum leap in performance.

During the initial 12 years, she was heading Quality System and IT, which enabled Behera to bring about a shift in the HR structure in the organisation.

During an interaction with Mobility Outlook's 'Women in Mobility' programme recently, Behera shared the ups and downs she faced during her career, which have helped in her journey to the leadership position. The pandemic is teaching a new way of learning, she said.

The task during her initial days at the group was to implement IT systems. However, while learning the nitty-gritty of automotive component manufacturing spending time at the shop floor, she realised a need for quality systems and data integration. With the support of her seniors at the organisation, she began this mission, which was not just implementing IT systems but organisational change; change in the mindset of people.

When the group was witnessing this radical change, she was carrying her first baby. Despite discomforts, she focussed on this assignment, and by the time it reached a certain level, she was blessed with a baby. At that time, Behera had to nurture two babies – her own and IT implementation in the organisation.

Supporting and encouraging women to join the automotive industry, she hopes that the future will be even more challenging but exciting.
