Daimler Truck

Daimler Truck is revolutionising road safety with its commitment to 'Vision Zero.' As of July 2024, all newly registered trucks, buses, and touring coaches in the EU will have to adhere to the updated General Safety Regulation (GSR), ensuring enhanced safety for drivers and all road users. In a bid to adhere to these emerging regulations the OEM is going above and beyond, implementing cutting-edge driver assistance systems and setting new industry standards.

Systems, especially, the electronic assistance, play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of moments of inattention caused by factors like fatigue, stress, or distraction. This not only enhances the safety of truck, bus, and touring coach drivers and passengers but also extends to benefit all other road users, including those traveling by car, bicycle, or on foot.

Daimler Truck, with its advanced assistance systems like Active Brake Assist 6, Active Sideguard Assist 2, Front Guard Assist, Active Drive Assist 3, and Traffic Sign Assist, not only meets but exceeds these safety requirements. These cutting-edge systems now set the standard across all vehicle variants, providing additional value for electric models like the eActros 600 and a comprehensive range of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, including the Actros series, the new Actros L generation, Arocs, Atego, Econic, and Special Trucks. This technology is also integrated into the city, intercity, and touring coaches of the Mercedes-Benz and Setra brands.

Rainer Müller-Finkeldei, Head, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Product Development, said, 'The EU General Safety Regulation is an important step towards accident-free driving – our 'Vision Zero.' We have been consistently pursuing this path for decades and are now setting new standards.'

Key Highlights

Pioneering Assistance Systems: Systems like Active Brake Assist 6, Active Sideguard Assist 2, Front Guard Assist, Active Drive Assist 3, and Traffic Sign Assist define a new safety standard across all vehicle variants.

Addressing Diverse Risks: The comprehensive safety approach aims to mitigate risks, including inattentiveness due to fatigue, stress, or distraction, benefiting drivers, passengers, and all road users.

Continuous Innovation: Daimler Truck has a history of innovation in safety features, from Active Brake Assist 1 (launched in 2006) to Active Sideguard Assist (introduced in June 2021).

Enhanced Sensor Fusion Technology: A new electronics platform with 270-degree sensor fusion technology provides an unprecedented view, improving the effectiveness of driver assistance systems.

Future-Ready Technologies: Anticipating further legal requirements, the truck manufacturing company is already developing systems expected to become mandatory in the coming years.

Features such as the reversing camera, which aids in avoiding collisions during manoeuvres or coupling, the tyre pressure loss warning system promoting extended tyre life and reduced fuel consumption, the attention assistance system for evaluating the driver’s fatigue level, and the option of retrofitting an alcohol-test-based immobiliser further enhance overall safety.

Daimler Truck works on its safety objectives across the entire product range, aiming to support and ease the burden on drivers during their journeys within the specified system limits. Despite the advanced capabilities of these systems, they cannot alter the fundamental principles of physics. Consequently, the driver retains full responsibility for safely operating the vehicle at all times, in accordance with legal requirements.
