In a significant stride towards safer driving experiences, Volvo Cars has unveiled its latest connected safety feature – the Accident Ahead Alert. This innovative system, a first in the automotive industry, leverages real-time data from traffic management centres to directly warn drivers of accidents ahead. The feature, set to be available initially in Denmark and then in compatible Volvo cars across Europe, aims to provide proactive alerts to help drivers avoid collisions and traffic disruptions caused by accidents.

The Accident Ahead Alert operates by instantly notifying drivers of potential hazards up to a few hundred meters ahead, utilising location data provided by national road authorities and compatible Volvo cars within the vicinity. This initiative aligns with Volvo's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for enhancing road safety.

Åsa Haglund, Head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre, stated, 'Using our groundbreaking connected safety technology, our Accident Ahead Alert can help Volvo drivers avoid unpleasant surprises, while contributing to making roads safer for all.'

According to a communication from the company, Volvo Cars has been at the forefront of connected safety technology since 2016, employing a cloud-based system that enables its cars to communicate real-time data, including alerts for slippery road conditions and hazards. With the introduction of the Accident Ahead Alert, Volvo extends its capabilities to provide timely accident notifications, adding an extra layer of safety for drivers.

The company plans to expand the integration of traffic data from various partners in the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem, fostering collaboration with national traffic management centres and other car manufacturers. This collaborative approach aims to create a network that enhances road safety collectively.

Stine Bendsen, Head of the Danish Traffic Management Centre at the Danish Road Directorate, expressed appreciation for Volvo's initiative, stating, 'A quick alert about an accident ahead gives the driver more time to slow down and increase the distance to the car in front. This helps to lower the risk of follow-up collisions and protect the people working to clear the road.'

Volvo car owners can contribute to road safety by opting for data sharing through the 'connected safety' option in their car's centre display. The shared data is anonymised to prioritise user privacy, and only essential information is communicated to other vehicles.

Volvo Car Group reported significant performance in 2023, achieving a record-breaking core operating profit of SEK 25.6 billion, with revenue reaching SEK 399.3 billion and global sales hitting a record 708,716 cars.
