IndiGo has applied for final DGCA approval to start operations with Boeing B777 twin-aisle jetliners. “In coordination with the process of these approvals, IndiGo will soon make this 777-capacity available for sale on the Delhi - Istanbul - Delhi route, subject to regulatory approvals,” a release from IndiGo stated.

The airline said it is working closely with the authorities to ensure all the required steps to obtain the approvals are completed well in time to ensure an early go-live date for deploying these widebody jetliners. It had earlier obtained in-principle approval for inducting the aircraft on a wet lease basis from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

IndiGo is to lease three B777 jetliners from Turkish airlines. Since the aircraft are being taken on wet lease, Turkish airlines will provide its pilots and cabin crew and maintenance services.

“This wet lease solution will also enable us to better utilise our A321 narrowbody fleet to continue our network deployment in light of the global supply chain issues,” an airline spokesperson stated. IndiGo has been facing issues with some of its jetliners having to be grounded due to the global shortage of aero engines.

Currently, the airline has a fleet of 290 single-aisle Airbus A320 family jetliners, which operate to 76 domestic and 26 international destinations.
