Mahindra and Mahindra has continued to deliver impressive results in Global New Car Assessment Program-run safety tests. In the latest crash tests conducted by the global crash safety agency, the Mahindra XUV 700 has received a five-star safety rating, alongside a four star rating for child occupants.

The SUV was tested in its most basic safety specification, which comes standard with two airbags, ABS brakes, and ISOFIX anchorages.

According to GNCAP, the driver’s and passenger’s head, neck, and chest were adequately protected. Even the knees of the driver and passenger were well protected during the crash test, the agency said.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General, Global NCAP said, “Mahindra has achieved a major milestone with this top score for adult protection and by becoming the first Indian made and owned brand to offer Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as a safety option.”

Driver tibias showed adequate protection and passenger tibias showed adequate and good protection. The bodyshell and footwell areas were rated stable and were capable of withstanding further loadings.

Furthermore, child seats for the three and 1.5-year-olds were installed rearward facing with ISOFIX anchorages and a support leg.

Both were able to prevent head exposure during the impact. The Child Restraint System (CRS) marking was satisfactory, GNCAP said in its release. In the back centre position, the car provides a lapbelt, which along with other aspects, resulted in a four-star rating for child occupant protection.

David Ward, President, Towards Zero Foundation said the availability of AEB, a potentially lifesaving collision avoidance technology, as well as high levels of occupant protection for adults and children, are significant signs of the Indian automotive market's increasing consumer awareness and desire for safety.

The test crash agency noted that the safety of the vehicle can further be improved by making its optional equipment such as side body airbags, side head curtain airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and three point belts in all seating positions, available as standard.

The SUV, which has been received by customers with record-breaking bookings, was launched at INR 11.99 lakh for the base MX variant. In its top AX7 variant, the SUV offers a slew of safety features, including seven airbags, a driver knee airbag, ESP, ADAS, front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and many more.
