German automotive major Volkswagen Group AG announced that it has appointed Thomas Schafer to succeed Murat Aksel as the Chairman of Skoda Auto’s Supervisory Board on July 15, 2022.

Besides, Schafer also holds the position of the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Head of the ‘Volume’ brand group, the company said.

Aksel would be stepping down from his current position while remaining a member of the supervisory body. Additionally, Schafer was recently elected Chairman of the Advisory Board of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and the Supervisory Board of SEAT/Cupra.

The new chairman noted that at the Group level, Skoda is responsible for emerging markets, such as India and North Africa, and for projects like developing the next generation of the VW Passat and Skoda Superb.

“Its responsibility for the MQB A0 Global Platform also shows how strongly the brand is established within the Group,” he said

The goal is to significantly and sustainably reduce costs and complexity through close cooperation among the brands, the company added.
