Supply chain disruptions, shortage of semiconductors, and the challenges owing to COVID-19 notwithstanding, passenger vehicles reported flat sales in FY21, recording 2% fewer sales than the previous year at 27,11,457 units, when compared to 27,73,519 units in the previous fiscal.

The primary reasons are the need for personal mobility and new launches, which enticed the upper middle class to buy their desired vehicles. And, this was fairly reflected on the top 10 selling passenger vehicles in FY21.

One of the biggest movements in the Top 10 passenger vehicle list is that of Maruti Suzuki Swift, which toppled Alto after many years, to take the Numero Uno position.

According to the company, for the fourth consecutive year, India’s five top-selling cars come from the Maruti Suzuki stable. These include Swift with 172,671 units, followed by Baleno with 163,445 units. The tall boy WagonR grabbed the third position with 160,330 units, while Alto and Dzire finished fourth and fifth with 158,992 units and 128,251 units respectively.

The top five models from Maruti Suzuki contributed to almost 30% of the overall passenger vehicle sales in FY21, while the overall Top 10 selling passenger vehicles contributed over 46.76%.

Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India said, “Despite increasing competition, the top five passenger vehicles sold in FY21 are from Maruti Suzuki. Our wide product range has helped us keep ahead of over 90 competing automobile brands in the country.”
