Heavy Industries Ministry Sanctions 4,973 Charging Stations Under FAME

The new guidelines of the ministry state that any individual/ entity is free to set up public charging stations provided it meets the criteria.

According to a notification by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, a total of 4,973 charging stations have been sanctioned under the FAME I and FAME II schemes so far. Under FAME India Scheme I & II, 532 charging stations were installed by 15 July 2022.

A majority, 2,877 electric vehicle charging stations in 68 cities across 25 States/UTs and 1,576 charging stations across nine expressways and 16 highways under Phase II of the FAME India Scheme, have been approved so far by the Ministry. Only 520 charging stations were approved under the Phase-I of the FAME India Scheme.

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), by first of July 2022, had established 3,448 electric vehicle charging stations at their retail outlets (ROs). Uttar Pradesh, with 308 electric charging stations installed at ROs, leads the list of Indian States with the maximum number of EV charging stations at oil filling stations. Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka have more than 200 such EV charging points.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu only have one such EV charging point. The regions of Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Pondicherry have less than ten such EV charging points installed.

The new guidelines of the Ministry state that any individual/ entity is free to set up public charging stations provided that such stations meet the technical, safety as well as performance standards and protocols and norms/ standards/ specifications decided by the Ministry of Power, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Central Electricity Authority (CEA) from time to time. FAME-II aims to support 7,090 e-Buses, five lakh electric three-wheelers, 55,000 electric four-wheeler passenger cars, and 10 lakh electric two-wheelers through subsidies. 

A recent report by ICRA noted that India would likely have 48,000 additional electric vehicle chargers installed at an investment of around INR 14,000 crore over the next four years.
